Abandoned Mine Pit Drowns 3 Girls


It was tragedy in Umuigboke community, Oriuzor in Ezza North L.G.A of Ebonyi State on 23rd February,
2013 when the bodies of three girls of the area who were drowned in Ebya, Izzi LGA were recovered.The deceased girls and three other girls went to get water from abandoned ditch in Ebya when the incident occurred.
The ditch was abandoned after mining activities, and it had collected water over a period of time.
The place, over the years had served as major source of water to the community despite the construction of manual bore holes by the local government council.
The six girls went for a burial in Ebya, after which they went to get water in the ditch. One of the deceased girls slipped into the ditch while other two girls who tried to rescue their friend from the abandoned ditched joined in the painful death as they were equally swallowed up by the water.
Serah Mgbada and Charity Mgbada on seeing the three girls slip into the ditch, went to rescue them while Chimobi on seeing that the two Mgbadas are also being drowned, entered the ditch and rescued them alive.

It took several hours to get the dead bodies of Chinenye Peace Mgbada who was an OND graduate of IMT, Enugu, Alice Nwokwu and Uzoamaka Nwiyima who just registered for SSCE to be taken this year.
Chineye Peace Mgbada was the sister of the rescued two girls and are children of the traditional ruler of Umuakochi Umuoru community, Oriuzor.
The lifeless bodies of the deceased were later recovered as the ditch was drained using a water distribution tanker which came miles away to drain the water in which the girls lost their lives.
Their bodies had already been deposited at FETHA II, Abakaliki.
Confirming the tragedy, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sylvester Igbo stated that the command had begun investigation into the matter.
